Aishite Imasu Film/Movie Review
Aishite imasu (Mahal kita) 1941 (2004)

HALLELUJAH! Sa wakas, meron din akong nagustuhan na pelikula with Joel Lamangan directing. Ok, ok... marami akong nababasa na magaling na director itong si Joel, pero wag ka, wala pa akong nagugustuhan na pelikula directed by him. That all changed of course with Aishite imasu.
PLOT: The story takes place in 1941, the era where Japan occupied the Philippines. Siempre, there's chaos, war, tears, but amidst of it all, there's also love. True love for a lover, and love for the country.
Bale, dalawa ang love story dito. Yung una, the love between Juday and Raymart. It's written in the stars na sila na talaga ang magkakatuluyan. Paglaki nga nila eh nagpakasal sila. Eh ito palang si Dennis, bata pa man sila eh may gusto na kay Raymart. Nung magbuo ng guerilla group itong si Raymart eh humingi siya ng tulong kay Dennis para mag-spy ang the latter. Noong una, ayaw ni Dennis, pero pumayag din dahil mahal nya si Raymart.
The second love story is between Dennis and Jay. Jay is an authority of the Japanese military. Nakita nya si Dennis na kumakanta sa plaza, who during that time is dressed in baro't saya. Nafall-inlove ang kumag kay Dennis, and the guerilla group sees this opportunity para makapag-spy sa Japanese squad.
Ang una mong mapapansin sa movie eh the great acting done by all. Maski sa pinakaliit-liitang papel, like yung mga extra, kudos sa acting. Magaling silang lahat. Siempre, ang pinakamagaling dito eh si Dennis. He did justice to the role as a mahinhing binabae. Maski yung mga pagluha - luha nya, maaantig talaga ang damdamin mo.
The cinematography was great also. Magaling ang mga shots at malinaw ang film.
The production design was above par compared to other Pinoy movies. Pati mga kotse noong unang panahon eh pinakita dito, which means ginastusan nila talaga ang movie. Eh ang hirap yatang makakuha ng vintage cars ano?
The settings was great. Feeling mo nasa baryo ka talaga noong unang panahon. The plaza, the schools, the houses... I wonder, saan kaya nila ni-shot itong film. It was a very good choice of setting.
Actually, I was really waiting for the part where Jay and Dennis kissed, kasi marami akong nababasa dito. Noong makita ko sya, I was very disappointed. Kasi naman halatang hindi comfy ang two characters tsaka mukhang camera trick lang. Ang sakin lang eh, KUNG MAGTA-TAKE KAYO NG RISK TO MAKE A FILM ABOUT TWO MEN INLOVE, EH LUBUS-LUBUSAN NYO NA. Hindi yung andami pang arte. Sayang kasi, I don't think that another film like this will be made in the very near future.
Pero siempre, ang pinakamagandang message imparted by the film eh, LOVE TRANSVERSES ALL BOUNDARIES. When one is inlove, it doesn't matter what's the gender, the nationality, the political beliefs, etc. Gustung-gusto ko ang character ni Jay dito, kasi, noon pa man, he knew that Dennis was a guy in drag, he knew that Dennis is a spy, pero after all of that, talagang mahal na mahal sya si Dennis, up to the point na hinuli na rin si Jay ng mga ka-comrade nya.
I love this film. In order for you to enjoy this film you have to watch it:
1. With an open mind
2. Without judgement and prejudice
Kasi kung homophobic ka, sinocentric at sarado ang utak mo, please lang, do us all a favour and do not watch this film, dahil hindi mo ito maeenjoy.
Kudos to Joel and Regal Films! Ay, talaga namang himala dahil for once, Regal films did an incredible job.
I give this film 5 Utots. I highly recommend that you watch this film, dahil marami kang matutunan about love.
